After all the efforts of getting Measure J approved in June 2010, it looks like the opening of the San Francisco 49ers' $1 billion stadium in Santa Clara is to be delayed a year, pushing the opening to at least 2015. As a Santa Clara resident, I'm concerned CEO Jed York will change his mind on Santa Clara. My main concern is if he uses Santa Clara to negotiate better terms with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and his proposed stadium. Mayor Gavin Newsom is offering to rebuild the stadium in Hunters Point as part of a revitalization project and to keep the 49ers in San Francisco. Mayor Gavin Newsom is giving Jed York until 2015 for a final decision. Without a new contract between the players' union and the NFL, it will be impossible for Jed to secure funds from the NFL and other investors needed to build the stadium in Santa Clara. Then sadly, we Santa Clara residents can kiss our hopes of hosting the 49ers goodbye.
Great, I wrote a synopsis of my response to this article and I lost it. I wasn't logged on. Long story short, Santa Clara is better off without the team.
Totally agree. It's so easy to get caught up in the excitement of having a professional team in the area, but when you strip away the emotion and crunch the numbers, it might be another story. In this day and age, I believe private enterprise should be able to raise funds for a stadium much like the SF Giants did.
