Police officer issues a ticket and explains the fines.

Despite his pleas for leniency, the NYPD issued Casey Neistat a ticket for not riding in the bike lane. The police officer disagreed with the bicyclist’s claims that to do so could be unsafe.

Not one to sit idle, Neistat made a video of himself following the rules. The result is entertaining as he collides head on with obstructions in his path.

Neistat may actually have a good point. Rules are rules, but should they be enforced literally or in spirit?

Perhaps Neistat’s situation is a reflection of bigger problems. The following video hints at the bad behavior of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists as viewed from a camera at a Manhattan intersection.

Honestly I can see why, rules are rules they are meant to be followed. Although some rules are a little dumb, but honestly I think the guy should have been let off with a warning, and if they were to be caught again then a ticket should be given.

Some rules such as this should be enforced on a case by case basis. I think designating most of those bike lanes is one of the biggest wastes of tax payer money in recent memory. Bikers rarely use them, and drivers often double park in the bike lanes, simply because parking is limited and not enough road for everybody. However, people especially tourists should understand that the police in New York City almost never give warnings (as far as I'm concerned). They will look for any and every reason to issue tickets, because they have a quota to fulfill. It's sad, but unfortunately that's life in the City.
