Is illegal immigration bad for America?

I believe that the impact of illegal immigrants is being seen in education, health care, and job security. The majority of illegal immigrants aren't paying taxes, so the burden is left to American citizens. We're paying for their children to go to school and for the entire families' health care. I don't feel this is fair to taxpayers.

I believe as long as illegal immigrants are acting as responsible non-citizens, then they have a fair chance at a better life in America. Some of my friend's parents came to this country illegally and have done well. Who are we to descriminate against those who are willing to work for a better life?

I understand that people have a right to a better life and I agree with it. However, the jobs that illegal immigrants are taking away from actual citizens, is essentially robbing them of their chance in working for a better life. We need to help our homeless and hungry first.

There are many arguments pro and con of this issue. One stance is that the jobs that the illegal immigrants are willing to do and the pay that they are willing to receive is far lower than what most Americans will take (even homeless or hungry ones).

Another position is that anyone who works here needs to feed the system, i.e. pay taxes. If a person is here for a prolonged state of time and decides to work, how long is an appropriate amount of time before we ask this person to become a citizen or leave?

I agree with you, Valerie.. I do have a problem with it, but there are much bigger problems. A lot of the jobs illegal immigrants do are not jobs that Americans want (like farm labourers).

Or -- you sometimes you do hear people complain that they take away jobs Americans would otherwise get, for lower wages. Honestly, whose fault is that: the businessman or woman offering the low wage, or the illegal immigrant that will accept it?

Really in all reality it sucks that they would be taking jobs from people who live here. But in all reality every company is outsourcing jobs to India and other countries like that. I can't remember the last time I called up a company and actually talked to someone who was here in america. If we want jobs in america we need to take those back it hurts us more than illegal immigrants really because there is a lot more customer service, call center jobs that we lose through out-sourcing.

It's a good thing. It proves that America is still an attractive place to go and our economy is healthy. Right now there's less illegal immigrants because of our poor economy. So a high number of illegal immigrants is definitely correlated with a good economy from my observations.

Unrestricted immigration is a sure recipe for the dissolution of our country. Increase the population who doesn't give a damn about being an American and you will surely destroy it. You grandchildren will pay the price.

Most people blame immigrants from 'stealing their jobs'. But there are so many jobs that most Americans would refuse to do. While I'm not for anything illegal, I do believe it promoted diversity and it gives these people a chance for a better life. Most illegal immigrants have families they have to feed. Would you really deny someone a job because it's apparently good for your country's economy?

Doing it the legal way is not as easy as it may sound. Not everyone gets a visa.

I completely support LEGAL immigrants, heck this country was founded by immigrants and they always have something to offer to this country. I just want it to be fair, I work, I pay taxes, I contribute to this society to obtain the American dream, so why shouldn't they? And if they don't contribute why should they be able to receive federal funds?

  11. That's the most sensible answer yet. Once people do something illegal, they are more likely to carry on that way. There is the same problem in the UK - it's a magnet for illegals, because as soon as they land here they can get benefits. If they come into the country legally, at least they are traceable and can pay their dues to the society they've chosen to be a part of.

No, I don't think illegal immigrants are the problem. Foreign workers are the problem. Let me explain the problem from a Californian point of view. A lot of the "illegal immigrants" taking up jobs, healthcare, and all that good stuff, did not intend to stay here. They send money back to their families in other countries. Quite a few intend to go back to those countries when they've made enough. Some of them are married over there, but then get married here! It's really frustrating when you realize that most don't come here to contribute to society and then continue to not contribute if and when they find a good enough reason to stay past when they originally wanted. It really shoves the blame onto the actual families who do come here and intend to stay. I may not like the illegal immigration, but the foreign workers are way worse because they aren't even immigrants!

I always find it odd and hypocritical when American citizens get worked up into a frenzy
when the state of illegal immigration comes into play. How quickly we forget, the obvious
irony not lost on me that the country was stolen and founded by immigrants themselves. I don't
know the plight of immigrated citizens, but as an African American, I can certainly sympathize
    with them.
