Anyone have any stories of what they feel about New York City?

New York City seems like a radiant place from what I've heard from friends. I have worked with people who were from there. From my impression, it seems New Yorkers are always in a rush and communicate as bluntly as possible leaving little to the imagination. Lol.

I have heard that rents in NYC are outrageous. Is it true that rent is about $2,100 for a 500 sq. ft. apartment? I can't imagine all of my furniture fitting in 500 sq. ft.

What is the cost difference of shopping in New York City versus LA or San Francisco? Is it really expensive? What is the sales tax?

Some of my friends have said that New Yorkers are not the most friendly. Why is that?

I wouldn't ever want to live in NYC, only visit. One reason is because the price of apartments there, for the amount of money you spend to live in a tiny apartment in NYC you could have a nice house in Florida. Plus theres to many buildings and not enough trees, i love seeing just tons of trees and vegetation.

I think it's a great place to visit but i'd never want to live there.

EDIT: "I have heard that rents in NYC are outrageous. Is it true that rent is about $2,100 for a 500 sq. ft. apartment? I can't imagine all of my furniture fitting in 500 sq. ft."

    Yep completely true.

From a lot of things that I hear on the internet and read in newspapers etc, I would definitely not like to live in New York City. It might be a great place to visit, but not to live in... I don't think I would be able to cope with the constant breaking of laws, busy streets and things like that.

Been there once, and can't say I liked it to be honest. Just WAY too many people.... People EVERYWHERE. The shopping is great, the attractions are great.... But the cost of living is incredibly unrealistic and just not worth it even if you could afford it somehow.

I'll take Seattle any day. :D

I think New York is a great city. I had the blessing of being able to work and live there for a 3 week period (a few years ago) in January. The weather was not the greatest, rain and snow and some days both but that did not stop the beat and energy of the city. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. People are living, working and moving at a fast pace. I had fun but it's definitely a place where I like to visit but would not want to live.

A couple years ago I was there for a business trip. I flew into LaGuardia airport at 10pm. Waited about an hour to catch a taxi to downtown New York. Checked into my hotel around midnite and decided to go for a walk near Times Square. Went to grab a bite. All I have to say is wow! The streets were packed with people walking around at midnite on a Monday! People were still in restaurants holding business meetings like it was 8pm! Truly the city that never sleeps! I must go back...

I go to this city about once every week. It is definitely an awesome place for shopping and tourism as there are many things to see. However, as mentioned before, it is expensive to live there because of the location of the apartments. Since the apartments are close to the shopping and business centers, the prices to live there will always be high. But again, it is an awesome place to visit and the city is always awake. I personally go there every weekend for shopping and it is never boring! ;)

Great place to be. I grew up in the Bronx. One of the boroughs in NY.

I just couldn't handle the litter and the lack of trees and greenery. Were i live it's practically overpopulated with trees and plants and i love that.

No, because of the cost of living, too busy for me, and like Alex said, not enough wildlife and plants. And I love South US better, so I'd never live up North anyways.

So you're a country person. Correct?
  16. Alex6788 Guest

Not really, i love the country but i don't live there, i live in a big city (big as in size not population) but it's not just concrete, there's lots of greenery. I live in suburbia, you know the suburbs.

But i do really like country areas, they're very pretty.

Ah, I see what you mean. I've lived in the suburbs as well.

Personally, I absolutely LOVE New York City. I live in New York State, around 6 hours from the city, somewhere near buffalo. I visit NYC whenever possible. I do get where some people are coming from with the lack of vegetation, and the crowding, but what I love about the city is how it feels so alive. Like someone said earlier in this thread, people are constantly doing things, moving and living. Some may feel that life is too fast paced, so I guess it's not for everyone, but for me, it's heaven. And I currently live in a small town!!!

I would love to visit NYC one day. Shopping, theatre, movies, stars.. ugh! It's just BEAUTIFUL. I haven't been there, but I can't wait to. I know I'll visit there someday. :)

I wish I can go to New York by the end of the year. From movies I've watched and pictures I've seen, it's an amazing city for tourists. The lights, snow, buildings, it's just beautiful! If I ever go there, I'd love to attend an SNL show and also visit the 30 Rockefeller building.
